What’s on your stairs right now?

Start there. It decides the whole job: what we do, how long it takes and what it costs. Pick the one that looks like your house.

New hardwood treadsCarpet

Carpet comes up first.

If there’s solid oak underneath, we sand it and stain it. If it’s builder pine or particleboard (most are), new hardwood treads and risers go on top of the old structure.

Sand it back and start over.

Stair refinishing FAQ

How long does it take to refinish stairs?

Usually two to four days, depending on the number of steps and what gets painted. Your written quote includes the schedule.

Still have a question?Ask the person who will do the work. Max answers questions at every free, in-person estimate.
01How long does stair refinishing take?

Most staircases take two to four days, depending on how many steps there are, whether we are painting risers and balusters, and the finish we use. You will get a schedule with your written quote.

02Can we still use the stairs while you work?

Stairs are often the only way upstairs, so we plan around it. Ask us about working in stages so you keep a way up while coats dry.

03Can you put hardwood treads on carpeted stairs?

Yes. We remove the carpet, pad and tack strips, then either refinish the treads underneath if they are solid hardwood or install new hardwood treads and risers.

04What are custom-bent LVP treads?

We heat your actual LVP planks and bend them around the front edge of each step. The stairs match your floor with no separate stair-nose piece, which looks cleaner and is less likely to trip anyone.

05Will the stairs be slippery after refinishing?

We use a satin or matte sheen on stairs, which has more grip than gloss. If you have small kids or older family members, tell us and we will factor that into the finish we recommend.

06How is stair work priced?

Stairs are priced per step, plus risers, landings, handrails and balusters as needed. You get a written, itemized quote before we start, with no surprises.
