The Restoration Journey
This Ford's Colony home had solid red oak flooring running through the formal living room, dining room, and main hallway. After 20-plus years, the original honey-tone oil-based finish had heavily ambered and scratched, leaving the floors looking dated and inconsistent across rooms.
The Challenge
The homeowners wanted a darker, richer look to complement a recent interior remodel — moving away from the orange cast of the old finish toward a deeper, more contemporary tone. The existing finish was thick and uneven from prior spot refinishing, requiring a full sand back to bare wood before any stain could be applied uniformly.
The Coastal Solution
We performed a full dustless sand using our Bona cyclone system connected to commercial HEPA vacuums, removing the old finish layers and leveling the surface completely. After sanding to bare wood and allowing the oak to acclimate, we applied Bona DriFast Stain in a custom-blended Jacobean tone — tested on a sample board first for the homeowners' sign-off. Two finish coats of Bona Traffic HD in satin locked in the color with a durable, non-yellowing waterborne topcoat.
