How the job went

This Grafton home in Yorktown had been opened up, with walls taken out so the living room, dining room and kitchen became one space. The homeowners wanted one continuous hardwood floor running through all of it, with no transitions or seams between rooms.

The Challenge

Taking out the walls had left small height differences across the open floor, so it needed careful leveling before any boards went down. The homeowners also wanted the floor finished on site instead of prefinished planks. Prefinished boards have a small bevel at every joint that collects dust and can look uneven across a big open room.

The Coastal Solution

We started by checking the whole subfloor and leveling it so it was flat and solid with no soft spots. Then we nailed down 2" solid white oak in a staggered pattern, running the boards the long way through the space so the room feels deeper. After installing, we sanded the whole floor in place with our dustless drum sander and put down a water-based sealer and two coats of Berger-Seidle Aqua-Matte. It's a German waterborne finish that keeps white oak's cool natural color without yellowing and holds up well to foot traffic.
